Take a handful of counters. Think back to our friend Steven and all those things on his shopping list. Work with a partner. How could you use counters to show (rep-re-sent) the different things he bought?
How many things did his mum ask him to buy? Count the counters (yes, that’s why we call them ‘counters’!)
How many are there in all?
And now, can you show what happened during Steven’s journey home, by taking away counters? Take one away from each row.
How many did you take away in all?
And how many did you have left?
